2014 Pantone Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid

2014 Pantone Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid

When I first saw the image of the Pantone Color of The Year for 2014, I thought, wow – This is going to be an exciting year for color! After choosing the warm Emerald Green in 2013, Pantone went back to the cool side of the color wheel for their 2014 choice. “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Pantone, they are the absolute authority on color. Pantone is known worldwide for setting color trends in every industry, including interior design.

As an interior designer, I look forward to seeing their selection, and I just love this color. What makes this color unique is that it can be used in modern, contemporary and classic designs.  I can definitely see clients wanting to incorporate this year’s color palette into their home.

The palette is a great mix of neutrals and vibrant colors. It reminds me of spring, when flowers are beginning to bloom. If you plan to use the radiant orchid palate, it is important to add more muted tones and the brighter hues so that a color balance is struck.

It is important to know how to work with these colors; so that the result does not become a jumble of crazy vibrant hues that may distract from the beauty of your home. On the other hand, if you use only neutral colors, it can leave a home feeling like it’s missing that extra special something. Radiant Orchid is a winner.

I’m all about color. Color gives personality, mood and interest to any environment. I cannot wait to use these colors in my next design projects.  See color samples on my Pinterest board at:
